Details:In 1936, many members of the public believed John Gilroy had drawn the pint glass the wrong way up. Finally, Gilroy explained that the ostrich, in trying to imitate the GUINNESS® sea lion, had balanced the glass on its beak, then tossed it in the air, opened its beak... and the glass went down the easiest way: right side up. However you enjoy your GUINNESS®, it's sure to go down nice and smooth!
John Gilroy:
John Gilroy, MA, ARCA, FRSA (1898-1985), was one of the most versatile, gifted and imaginative 20th-century artists. Best known for producing some of the most memorable images in British advertising, he was also a renowned and successful landscape artist and portrait painter of royalty and celebrities.
After he produced several successful poster designs, the S.H. Benson advertising agency recruited Gilroy in 1925. In 1928, Benson's undertook its first GUINNESS® advertising campaign; until the early 1960s, Gilroy was above all associated with GUINNESS®.
Gilroy is particularly associated with two GUINNESS® stout campaigns, which ran simultaneously for nearly thirty years, beginning in the 1930s. The first involved the "GUINNESS® for strength" slogan, which depicted people performing incredible feats of strength empowered by GUINNESS® stout. The second campaign featured a menagerie of zoo animals who found ingenious ways to swipe their keeper’s GUINNESS® stout. The zookeeper was a caricature of the artist himself.
Because they are custom created, all sales of Art-on-Demand prints are final.
